Martin Ince: In your internet book you describe the pleasure with which you noticed a newspaper headline "New use of the Internet in Colombia." You naturally hoped that new technology might provide hope for his beleaguered country, for which you care greatly. On reading the article, you were disappointed to find that the "new use" it had in mind was the use of email to deliver ransom demands.

What do we learn from this? Does it show that new technology tends to to be taken up by existing organizations (it this case unpleasant ones), rather than allowing the creation of new ones?

Manuel Castells: No, what it shows is that society, as it as, appropriates technology for its own uses and values...

-- Manuel Castells and Martin Ince, Conversations with Manuel Castells
